PUBLISHER: ESCROW

Escrow started in 2006 as an experiment in print and publishing using ISBNs, print-on-demand and online distribution to play around within the global book market. The first issue was a dummy copy, lorem ipsum text blocks and images of the Adobe color calibration chart Olé no Moiré, and the second issue was Melville’s Moby Dick; two titles defining boundary limits for content. By tweaking the meta-data and having generous terms of receipt Escrow would get picked up by retailers regardless of what was actually being produced. Like the fiduciary term escrow, the publication could be a site where a negotiation takes place. Over the years, Escrow has turned into a journal exploring post-industrial culture through samizdat reprints and one-off artist projects. Subjects have included a chemical analysis of a hoax, a radio play about hoarding pennies, democracy and education, Belgian mineral concerns, nuclear war and civic architecture. The current issue (#12) is an animatic about the construction of a data-center.
