Angela Melitopoulos: Cine(so)matrix

The publication accompanying the eponymous retrospective devoted to Angela Melitopoulos (Munich, 1961) puts forward a journey through the artist’s most pertinent projects from the late 1990s to the present day and is completed with a series of texts which grant more in-depth insight into the key aspects of her work, underscoring the radicalness of her rebuttal of dominant narratives.

Melitopoulos, regarded as one of the salient figures in Europe’s art scene over recent decades, addresses in her work issues such as the migration experience, popular struggles against the most rapacious version of industrial society and the continued existence of magical thinking in contemporary societies. Her critical approach to these themes is also bound tightly to her reflection on the languages of video and image, with her artistic practice characterized by an investigative curiosity straddling questions raised in her video-essays and the technical and expressive mediums she employs in devising them and their subsequent spatial formalization in installations.
