Imperfect Solidarities
<p>We are often told that social or political change must come through empathy and emotional understanding of the oppressed. But what if these calls to love our neighbors are unstable grounds on which to build effective political alliances? In <em>Imperfect Solidarities</em>, Aruna D’Souza takes examples from art, literature, and exhibition making to argue for a politics based on moments of consensus that exist beyond or before empathy, that allow our differences to remain, and that are based not on love but on the much more difficult obligation to care for one other.</p>
