La Place #0

La Place is a feminist magazine directed by Maya Ouabadi and Saadia Gacem with a team composed entirely of women researchers, writers, journalists, photographers and artists. It is bilingual (Arabic-French), and represents a new space of expression for women. In our inaugural issue, we showcased a diverse set of feminist profiles and visions. We interviewed physician and activist Fadhila Chitour, and actress and psychologist Meriem Medjkane. We featured a short story by Souad Labbize, and a historical essay on the Algerian feminist movement between 1989 and 1991. We also highlighted the current feminist movement within the Hirak, the “Feminicides Algeria” initiative, explored the work of artist Rima Rezaiguia, and ran a legal column recounting the court battle of a woman facing an abusive divorce. Subsequent issues covered legal, historical and social feminist struggles across Algeria and its disapora.
