PORTRAITS

PORTRAITS is a solo exhibition by Ghislaine Leung displayed at Museum Abteiberg from the 3 June to the 24 October 2021. The exhibition comprises of works commissioned by Museum Abteiberg and produced over the duration of a year from 2020-21. The exhibition is curated by Susanne Titz and Haris Giannouras.

PORTRAITS forwards the artist’s interest into forms of instituting and the possibility of critique. PORTRAITS operates on an expanded and intersectional level that shifts from questions of permanence to circulation and distribution: the work is understood both as labor and object as tethered to multiple lives, inquiring into issues of liveness rather than institutional specificity.

From the material dependencies of the scores deployed by Leung to the circulation of the objects shown, the artworks in PORTRAITS continually challenge what constitutes a work, a life, where identity resides and how we might value and institute value differently.

The notes on the works in PORTRAITS included in this pamphlet were composed by Haris Giannouras and edited by Ghislaine Leung. A selection of three texts by Ghislaine Leung, originally published in Partners (2018) is appended at the end of this pamphlet. The German translation is by Nikolaus Schneider and Susanne Titz.

This information on PORTRAITS is provided as per the required character count and has been edited by Haris Giannouras, Ghislaine Leung and Susanne Titz. Details are correct as of May 2021 and are subject to change dependent on requirements and resources available.
