Shanghai Frequencies
<p>Shortly after arriving in Shanghai my attention is caught by a remark in a newspaper: ‘The events in our lives are like a series of bells being struck and the vibrations spread outwards, affecting everything, our present, and our futures, of course, but our past as well. Everything is changing and vibrating.’ The image still resonates a day or two later in the cool darkness of the exhibition halls of the Shanghai Museum. In a moment of dizziness, probably caused by the spotlights directed at the archaeological finds, the ancient bronze bells and vessels remind me of models of a future architecture, an architecture and future constantly ahead of us, it seems. At least it is an architecture different from and more alien than the buildings of Shanghai waiting for me in the bright sunlight outside the museum, even though the top of the museum, according to a description, is ‘shaped like an ancient cooking pot.’…</p>
